Major California River, arising in the southern Sierra Nevada, and emptying into the San Joaquin Valley. From its headwaters in Sequioa National Park, northwest of Mt. Whitney, the Kern River flows south for most of its length, turning west at Isabella Lake to plunge through a deep canyon to the San Joaquin Valley.
