Rico was settled in 1879 as a silver mining center in the Pioneer Mining District; today it functions as a historic and tourism site. The population was 288 at the 2020 census. Rico is a name derived from Spanish meaning "rich".

Rico was the original county seat of Dolores County, Colorado, and it was established alongside the county in 1881. In 1946, the county seat was officially relocated to Dove Creek, where the current government offices are located today.Current Use: The former Rico courthouse now serves as the Rico Town Hall and Library and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
